Windmill in Zwiep, NL, Acrylics on stretched canvas, 24" x 30"

Zwiep is a small hamlet near the town of Lochem where I grew up. This is a working wheat mill. There's a bakery adjacent to it that sells products made with the milled wheat. Most notable the Zwiepse bolussen; a cinnamon sugar donut. There was also a small theme park/play ground consisting of wood carved witches and creatures made by the old miller and baker, Bakker Postel.  Legend has it that in the nearby woods the  "witte wieven" (ghostly female figures) can be seen. There is a story that goes with it where the humble, poor farmer's son wins the hand of an eligible girl with the help of the "witte wieven" over a coward of a rich farmers son.
