Zutphen is an old city in the East of The Netherlands. It was part of a vast European trade network of Hanseatic cities along the main rivers in Europe. The remnants of the medieval wall around the city are still visible. It is estimated to have been built around 1250, which is around the same time the city became an important trade center.
This painting shows what's left of a gate in the wall called the Berkelpoort (The Berkel is the river). I painted it the way it looked around dusk as I walked by to head back to the Airbnb. It gets lit with large yellow floodlights.
